HEB ISD - The National Council for Geographic Education (NCGE) will present Marci Smith Deal, K-12 social studies coordinator for the District, with its annual Distinguished Teaching Achievement Award for 2001. Deal has been coordinator for seven years.
Awards will be given to 39 K-12 teachers from the United States and Canada. These awards recognize outstanding contributions to geographic education. Colleagues submitted nominations for the awards, and honorees were chosen by judging panels at the elementary, middle/junior high, senior high or post secondary level.
The NCGE President, Robert S. Bednarz, Texas A&M University, will present plaques to recipients at the awards banquet during the NCGE annual meeting August 1-4, 2001 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Honorees receive free registration to the conference and a one-year membership in the NCGE.
Deal has been with the District 17 years. Before taking her current position, Deal taught at LD Bell High School for two years and at Hurst Junior High School for eight years. She has spent 15 years as a teacher consultant for National Geographic.
Deal has a Master of Education from the University of North Texas, a Bachelor of Science from UTA, and she has nearly completed her work on a Master of Science in Geography from Texas A&M University. Deal is a life-long resident of the HEB area.
